Abstract:

In 1894 Maxime Bocher determined all coordinate systems in three dimensions in which the Laplacian separates. Although much is known about the corresponding harmonic functions in some of the coordinate systems, very little progress has been achieved in the case of the general 5-cyclidic coordinate system. The talk will present some new results originating from joint work with Howard Cohl.

Speaker Bio: I received my Ph.D. in the area of special functions/mathematical physics under the supervision of F.W. Schaefke in Konstanz, Germany. Since 1990 I am a professor at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. I am interested in many areas of mathematics including Differential Equations, Spectral Theory, Special Functions, Statistics, Insurance Mathematics.
