OILGEN: Oil reservoir simulation - generated problems

Discipline: Oil reservoir simulation

Oil reservoir simulation is strongly oriented towards discretization of reservoirs with full 3D grids. Full grids provide a regular structure that can be exploited for reduced overhead and vector processing speeds. The restriction of a full grid can cause a substantial increase in the number of grid cells when finer refinement is used in the neighbourhood of coning wells and faults. Coalescing unnecessary cells into a coarser mesh in the areas of the reservoir away from coning wells and faults greatly reduces the number of cells. This can reduce the number of unknowns by a factor of 2.
