OLMSTEAD: The Olmstead Model

from the NEP Collection

Set OLMSTEAD
Source: K. Meerbergen, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
Discipline: Hydrodynamics

The Olmstead model represents the flow of a layer of viscoelastic fluid heated from below. The equations are

du/dt=(1-c)d^2v/dX^2+c d^2u/dX^2 +R u - u^3; B du/dt=u-v

with boundary conditions u(0) = u(1) = 0 and v(0) = v(1) = 0. u represents the speed of the fluid and v is related to viscoelastic forces. The equation was discretised with central differences with grid size h=1/(N/2). After discretization the equation can be written as dot(x)=f(x) with x^T=[u_1,v_1,u_2,v_2,...u_{N/2},v_{N/2}]. One seeks the rightmost eigenvalues of the Jacobi matrix A=df/dx with parameters B = 2, C = 0.1 and R = 4.7.
