This is a Java applet which generates an upper Hessenberg matrix with ill-conditioned eigenvalues and determinant 1. The eigenvalues of the Frank matrix may be obtained in terms of the zeros of the Hermite polynomials. They are positive and occur in reciprocal pairs. Thus, if N is odd, 1 is an eigenvalue. The floor(N/2) smaller eigenvalues are ill-conditioned.

This generator was developed by Bruce Miller of NIST based on Nick Higham's Test Matrix Toolbox for MATLAB.
