These are four complex symmetric matrices that arise in modeling acoustic scattering phenomena. The fundamental operator is the Helmholtz equation with varying k and Dirichlet boundary conditions. All four problems come from a grid with 29 by 29 interior points. Some interior points are fixed as conductors. Five and nine-point difference formulae are used depending on the value of k at points in the grid.

Standard iterative methods, even with well-chosen preconditioners, perform poorly on these problems.
